Tips and Troubleshooting: Some Words of Caution for Using Smart Talk

A few additional guidelines will ensure your child’s work with smart talk is productive.

Smart Talk and Exposures

Smart talk can be used both prior to and after planned exposures, but it should not be used during planned exposures because it can interfere with inhibitory learning.

Smart Talk and OCD

It is vital that your child’s problem be clearly identified, as outlined in chapter 4, prior to employing smart talk. Haley and Camilla, the twelve-year-old girls who were having trouble in class, manifested similar symptoms. Yet, after identifying the problem, it became apparent the two girls’ fear structures were quite different. While Haley suffered from a social anxiety disorder, Camilla demonstrated perfectionism, a common offshoot of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and generalized anxiety disorder.

When dealing with OCD, smart talk should not be used. Frequently, children with OCD turn their smart talk into a ritual, which is counterproductive to treatment. Thus, for example, an OCD-prone child, such as Camilla, should not dialogue with Worrybug or Germ Worm. Chapter 10 addresses OCD-specific tools and techniques.
